No injuries after large barn fire in Centre Wellingon

Happened Friday night on a property on 4th Line - damage pegged at around $200,000

A 19th century barn in Centre Wellington has been destroyed after a fire late Friday night.

Fire officials were called to a fully involved blaze on 4th Line at 7:05 p.m., a fire Centre Wellington deputy fire chief Jonathan Karn said firefighters “could see it a ways away.”

He said 30 firefighters responded from both Elora and Fergus.

A water tanker from Rockwood was also called in.

Karn confirms there were no animals inside the barn at the time, and nobody was hurt.

“The fire was contained to the actual area of the barn, it did not spread to structures,” he said.

“It was fully burning when we arrived.”

He said firefighting efforts were focused on defence, to ensure the fire didn’t spread.

He added the cold evening was a factor, as equipment started to freeze during operations.

Firefighting efforts wrapped up around 1:30 a.m., though they did return Saturday morning to monitor hot spots.

The cause of the fire is undetermined, but Karn said there was electricity running to the barn.

He said a damage estimate is being marked down at a “couple hundred thousand” dollars.
