GUELPH/ERAMOSA – The province’s police watchdog has invoked its mandate following a stolen vehicle investigation that ended in the Guelph area resulting in multiple arrests.
Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) media relations officer Jeff Dillon said in an email on Thursday on Tuesday HRPS officers responded to a stolen vehicle investigation in the area of Guelph Line in Halton Hills.
“As a result of the investigation by HRPS officers, four people are in custody and have been charged,” Dillon wrote. “The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) was contacted and has since invoked its mandate.”
He deferred all other inquiries to the SIU.
The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of police that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians.
The SIU has the case listed on its website indicated as “investigation ongoing” but does not provide any details.
An eyewitness told GuelphToday she saw a car travelling westbound on Highway 7 at a high speed hit the centre of the roundabout and fly over it. She then saw the driver flee through the grounds of a nearby landscape company before being apprehended by HRPS.
She also saw a U-Haul truck “taken down” by HRPS at Wellington Road 29 and Highway 7.
EloraFergusToday had reached out to Wellington OPP for details on Tuesday but was redirected to HRPS.
The SIU did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
