The Fergus dog park has become a popular destination for dog owners locally and from the region.

FERGUS – Those who frequent the dog park in Fergus are being encouraged to attend an information update about a future potential “active transportation network” associated with the park.

On Aug. 15 at 6 p.m., the Township of Centre Wellington is holding a meeting at the CW Sportsplex about the dog park in Fergus.

A Twitter post by the township says, “the purpose of the meeting is to discuss the future potential of an active transportation network and the dog park.”

The dog park in Fergus is a large, unfenced piece of land tucked away in an industrial area in the north part of town.

A property beside the dog park, used in an unofficial capacity by dog park users with permission from the property owner, is beside where the township is building the North Fergus Business Park with the township creating a multi-use path as part of the project.

Some dog park regulars and volunteers expressed concern about how the dog park would be impacted by this development and worried about the potential of negative interactions between dogs and cyclists.

Pat Newson, Centre Wellington’s manager of community services, said in a past email any potential active transportation network involving the dog park is a concept only and would need to be worked out through community engagement.

The township is encouraging those who frequent the dog park and members of the community to attend the Aug. 15 meeting.

The meeting will be held in Gord Brown Hall at the CW Sportsplex and is free to attend.
