WELLINGTON COUNTY – Perth-Wellington’s MPP will not be seeking a fourth term in the next provincial election slated for June 2022.
Randy Pettapiece announced on Wednesday he has decided to not seek re-election after serving more than 10 years as MPP.
“It was a difficult decision because despite the challenges of political life, I truly enjoy the job,” Pettapiece said in a statement.
“I enjoy representing and promoting the communities in every part of our riding. I appreciate the constituents, colleagues and friends I have met over the years.”
He states he turned 73 years-old this month and running again would mean potentially committing to another four year term. In retiring he said he chooses to spend those hours as a full-time husband, father and grandfather.
Pettapiece was first elected to the riding, which covers Wellington County’s three northern municipalities along with Perth County, in 2011 gaining it from the Liberals.
His statement noted he first ran because he wanted the provincial government to listen better to local concerns, he believes in public service and was encouraged by members of the community to run.
He lists accomplishments such as cancelling a proposed wind-turbine project in North Perth, GO service expansion to Stratford and St. Mary’s, bringing high-speed internet to rural areas and opening the expansion at Louise Marshall Hospital in Mount Forest.
“I will continue to work hard for my constituents until the end of my term in June 2022,” Pettapiece said.
“I also look forward to continue supporting the government as we further recover from the pandemic and work to build a better future for everyone.”
