An Elora resident who has helped us keep a pulse on history is receiving one of the country’s highest honours.

Terry Copp has been appointed one of 64 new members into the Order of Canada.

Governor General Mary Simon's office made the announcement Thursday morning.

Copp is a professor emeritus at Wilfrid Laurier University and the founder and director emeritus of the Laurier Centre for Military and Strategic Disarmament Studies.

“He fostered a rich community of scholarship and cemented Canada’s role in the Second World War,” a news release sent out by the Governor General's office said. “His ongoing work is a legacy to future generations and their knowledge of our past.”

The 86-year-old has written several books, and is considered one of Canada’s “foremost military historians.”

Overall, the Governor General’s office announced 83 new appointments, including musician Avril Lavigne, former Bank of Canada governor Stephen Poloz and Joyce Napier, a former journalist and the country’s ambassador to the Vatican.
