NEWS RELEASE

Wellington County is excited to announce that applications are now open for the 2025 Experimental Acres programme.

Piloted in 2022, Experimental Acres helps local farmers mitigate the risk of applying new regenerative agriculture practices. Supports of the programme include micro-grants (up to $3,000), education, soil testing, networking opportunities, staff expertise, and communitybuilding events.

“Regenerative agriculture can be practiced in as many ways as there are farms,” said Jordan Grigg, Agriculture Coordinator. “Experimental Acres projects are designed by the participants because farmers know their land best.”

Projects typically fall within three categories:

  1. Crop / Planting – for example, cover cropping, intercropping, or introducing new crops into the rotation.
  2. Animal / Grazing – for example, rotational grazing, silvopasture, or bale grazing
  3. Innovation – for example, tarping to reduce tillage intensity, winter crop rotation, or planting tall grass prairie.

“We welcome any ideas from Wellington County farmers interested in improving yield, soil health, and sustainability,” said Grigg. “Adopting regenerative practices comes with a learning curve, but Experimental Acres is here to help.”

Applications for projects in 2025 will be accepted until Jan. 19, 2025, and approved pending 2025 budget deliberations.
