ELORA – In the spirit of a teenager from Elora, who in the face of cancer didn’t let it damper her positive energy, comes a community concert to raise money to support an oncologist doing sarcoma research.
Team Addy in partnership with Riverfest will host 'A Concert with Addy-tude' at the Elora Centre for the Arts later in September headlined by award winning alt-rockers Monowhales.
The concert will also feature Canada’s Got Talent finalist Stacey Kay, folk-rock singer Georgia Harmer and local singer Lauren Roy.
Team Addy is an organization committed to raising awareness and money to go towards sarcoma research research.
The organization is named for Addison Hill, known as Addy, an Elora teenager diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called angiosarcoma when she was in Grade 8 the fall of 2021. She was known for facing the disease with positivity, a sense of humour and resilience but would later pass away in July 2022.
Team Addy has set a goal of raising $500,000 for Sick Kids Hospital to support the work of Addy’s oncologist Dr. David Malkin. Through two family fun days, community events and other support, Team Addy is more than halfway there according to a press release.
A press release stated Andy Speers and Curt McQueen, two staff members from Elora PS where Addy attended, conceived of this concert in her memory and received the blessing of her parents Jessica and Dave.
“Their willingness to embrace an idea, contribute their time, resources, and emotional energy is remarkable,” Jessica Hill said in a press release. “Our family knew that with their support, we could create an event that would not only make a lasting impact raising funds for sarcoma research, but also a way to bring our community together to inspire hope and celebrate Addy's life.”
The expected size and scope of the event meant organizers would need help and contacted the Riverfest team who were immediately on board.
A Concert with Addy-tude takes place on Sept. 23 at the Elora Centre for the Arts with the doors at 4 p.m. and concert starting at 5 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online and children under 12 are free with a paying adult.
