A police watchdog agency has called off its investigation of sexual assault allegations against Wellington OPP officers, stating there is “insufficient evidence” to continue.

In a post on its investigation status page on Friday, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) announced its probe into an alleged sexual assault by detachment officers against an unidentified individual is now closed.

“Based on the SIU’s preliminary inquiries, including steps taken to clarify the nature of the complaint, it became clear that the evidence could not amount to a sexual assault,” explained spokesperson Monica Hudon via email.

This is the first time the SIU has acknowledged more than one officer was reportedly involved.

The alleged sexual assault was brought to the SIU’s attention by the Thurder Bay Police Service in February, promoting the investigation, Hudon noted.

No additional details were provided.

Hudon previously said the alleged sexual assault is said to have happened during the summer of 2019.
