As Halloween approaches, the Wellington County OPP is reminding residents to prioritize safety while celebrating this festive occasion. Halloween is a time for fun, but it's essential to keep safety in mind for both trick-or-treaters and drivers.

Trick-or-treating tips:

  • Plan Your Route: Discuss and plan your trick-or-treating route in advance, ensuring it covers well-lit areas and familiar neighborhoods.
  • Costume Safety: Choose costumes that are bright and visible. Consider adding reflective tape and opting for face paint instead of masks to ensure clear visibility.
  • Accompanied Children: Young children should be accompanied by an adult. For older kids, establish a curfew and a route that they can share with you.
  • Use Flashlights: Equip trick-or-treaters with flashlights or glow sticks to increase visibility.
  • Look Both Ways: Remind children to look both ways before crossing the street and to use sidewalks whenever possible.
  • Only Approach Well-Lit Homes: Encourage children to only approach houses that are well-lit and to never enter a stranger's home.

Driver safety:

  • Slow Down: Be mindful of children walking in the streets and drive slowly in residential neighborhoods.
  • Stay Alert: Watch for children darting into the street and for unexpected obstacles, such as decorations.
  • Avoid Distractions: Put away mobile devices and minimize distractions while driving, especially in areas with high pedestrian traffic.

Home safety tips:

  • Clear Pathways: Ensure that walkways and driveways are clear of obstacles and decorations to prevent accidents.
  • Pumpkin Safety: If using candles in pumpkins, keep them away from flammable materials and never leave them unattended.
  • Pet Precautions: Keep pets secured indoors to avoid stress and potential escapes during trick-or-treat hours.
