Wellington County Museum and Archives’ groovy new exhibit is Wild Child, exploring fashions and fads in the 1960s-70s through the Wellington County Museum and Archives collection. Learn how space, war, and hippie culture influenced household ephemera and the clothes we wore. Re-live the wild patterns and bold colours in a time when the rules were changing.
“The idea for this exhibit came about when we were exploring our textile collection. We were mesmerized by the variety of wild colours and patterns that we found in our own collection,” said Curatorial Assistant Lindsay Woelfle, who co-curated the exhibit with Conservator Emily Benedict. “Once we started researching the 1960s and 1970s, we were surprised at how many life changing social events occurred in these two decades. In particular, Civil Rights, the Women’s movement, the Vietnam War, the Space Race and Woodstock, all played a role in shaping the world we live today,” said Emily.
The exhibit will open June 18 and runs until May 2023.
The Wellington County Museum and Archives is located on Wellington Road 18 between Fergus and Elora. The galleries are open weekdays from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and 1 to 5 p.m. on weekends and holidays. Admission by donation.
