WELLINGTON COUNTY – The province’s proof of vaccination policy has not led to many incidents for the Wellington OPP to deal with over the past two weeks.

Since Sept. 22, Ontario residents have been required to provide proof of full vaccination and identification to access some businesses and services such as indoor dining, bars, recreation facilities, gyms and theatres.

Satnam Chauhan, Centre Wellington's bylaw enforcement officer, said while he may provide some education to residents and businesses on this matter, enforcement falls under the jurisdiction of the OPP in Centre Wellington.

Cheri Rockefeller, media relations officer with Wellington OPP, said via email they have “only received a few calls for service involving the requirements for proof of vaccination against COVID-19 since the new government protocols came into effect.”

Rockefeller said she only came across four or five incidents when manually checking occurrences but giving an exact figure is difficult because they can be classified as many different types of calls including: police information, municipal bylaw, police assist or trespass.

No charges or tickets have been laid in these incidents.

“Officers either attend in person or speak to the involved individuals on the telephone,” Rockefeller stated.

“Wellington County OPP will continue to work closely with the municipalities, the province, business and WDG Public Health unit to ensure residents are protected from COVID-19.”
