Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health is announcing a collaboration with GetAKit, an innovative online platform offering free laboratory-based testing for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) including chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis and hepatitis C, and HIV at-home self-testing kits.
GetAKit, developed as a study from the University of Ottawa and undertaken by local public health units across Ontario, aims to make sexual health testing simple, private and accessible for all. The program is designed to empower individuals to take control of their sexual health while removing barriers that exist in traditional healthcare settings. This program is being adopted by multiple public health units across Ontario, most recently being WDG Public Health.
“Accessible testing is a key step in preventing the spread of HIV and other STIs,” said Dr. Matthew Tenenbaum, Associate Medical Officer of Health. “GetAKit provides individuals with a discreet and convenient way to prioritize their health, offering timely testing and connections to care if needed.”
The program offers:
- Free at-home and lab-based testing for STIs with requisitions provided by a licensed physician.
- Free HIV self-testing kits that can be ordered online and delivered to your door.
- Recommendations for preventive services, such as vaccinations and HIV prevention strategies.
- Resources and support for understanding results and accessing care.
GetAKit is particularly valuable for individuals who may face barriers to accessing healthcare services, including those in the MSM (men who have sex with men) population, people involved in the sale or trade of sex, individuals who use substances and those with multiple sexual partners.
The partnership with GetAKit is part of Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health’s ongoing efforts to reduce the stigma surrounding HIV and STI testing, promote early detection and treatment, and ensure equitable access to sexual health services.
