Punjabi Ladies' Festival to be held at sportsplex

FERGUS – The Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex will host a Punjabi cultural festival later this month. 

The community centre will hold the Punjabi cultural festival of Teeyan da Mela, also known as Teej or Ladies’ Festival on Aug. 24. 

An organizer explained in a social media post Teeyan season is about happiness, prosperity and well being where Indian women gather together to celebrate the beginning of the rainy season.

“Dressed in their best Punjabi outfits like Punjabi Gagara, Phulkari Dupatta, Jutti, Patiala Salwar Suit and decked by traditional ornaments, women gather on this day and look a medley of color and beauty,” the post said. 

The event is said to feature traditional Indian folk dancing of Gidha and Bhangra, along with games, competition, folk singing, a DJ, dance floor and food and drink. 

The Ladies’ Festival runs from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the sportsplex on Aug. 24.
