WELLINGTON COUNTY – Those caught speeding in the future on certain Wellington County roadways may be facing increased fines for their actions.
A report going forward to a roads committee meeting Tuesday recommends approving nine community safety zones on the road network.
In community safety zones, speeding fines are doubled and these sections are also eligible for future automated speed enforcement, better known as photo radar.
A consultant’s evaluation of 48 road segments resulted in the following recommended roadways to have community safety zones:
- Wellington Road 18 between Highway 6 and McTavish Street in Fergus
- Wellington Road 123 between Henry Street East and York Street in Palmerston
- Wellington Road 11 between Andrews Drive and Spring Street in Drayton
- Wellington Road 7 between Wellington Road 21 and Speers Road in Elora
- Wellington Road 24 between Church Street and Station Street in Hillsburgh
- Wellington Road 46 through both north and south of Old Brock Road in Aberfoyle
- Wellington Road 18 between Chapel Street and Kertland Street in Elora
- Wellington Road 124 between East Church Street and Millwood Road in Erin
- Wellington Road 6 fronting Wellington Heights High School in Mount Forest
These road sections have been determined to be high risk due to their proximity to community amenities such as schools, downtown areas, parks and shopping.
The community safety zones will need full council approval before being ratified and all community safety zones will be communicated to the public through notices to adjacent properties and media releases.
