A new date has been announced for a battery energy storage systems (BESS) information session.
The original meeting, which was postponed earlier this month due to inclement weather, is now set for Tuesday, Feb. 25, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Aboyne Hall in the Wellington County Museum and Archives.
The event, which is being put on by Energy Storage Canada and the Energy Safety Response Group, will allow residents to learn about about BESSs and their role in creating a safer, more resilient energy future. There will also be a roundtable discussion involving local leaders, safety experts and community members.
BESSes are rechargeable batteries that can store energy from different sources during off-peak hours and onto the electricity grid when needed while reducing the province's reliance on fossil fuel generation.
Aypa Power is currently planning a BESS just south of Fergus at 6235 Guelph St. which is anticipated to generate up to 211 MW of energy storage and house approximately 200 batteries and 64 inverters, an interconnection substation, a water reservoir and a stormwater management facility.
Construction is anticipated in Fall 2025, with the lands planned for decommissioning and restoration in 2052.
