Mapleton council finally choses a design for Drayton water tower

The coating of the tank will commence on April 25

DRAYTON - After a lengthy process, council has finally decided what design to put on its controversial water tank.

Mapleton council approved the option five design that staff proposed on Tuesday, with Coun. Paul Douglas being the only one opposed to the option.

Douglas still liked the original 2019 tendered water tower design, which Mapleton mayor Gregg Davidson constantly referred to as the “birthday cake design”.

“The fifth option was not requested by council but proposed by staff as the price is lower and only adds one day of work in the schedule,” explained Sam Mattina, township’s director of public works, during the meeting.

“Option one is priced at $60,342 with six additional days of work; option two is priced at $43,546 with four additional days; option three was at $60,342 with six additional working days; and option four was at $43,546 with four additional working days.”

Option five is priced at $9,555 with one additional day of work added in the schedule. The $9,555 is an additional cost to the $30,000 already in the contract to make the water tower, which will be put towards the repainting of the tower when needed.

John Morrison, director of finance, noted that repainting the water tower won't happen until 25 years from now, “the additional $10,000 won’t be a lot of extra money over the course of 25 years.”

Staff liked the option five design as the design is more appealing and can be used as a marketing piece for the township. Council thought option five was more appealing and blended nicer with the design and the township’s logo.

The coating of the tank will commence on April 25.
