A longtime school board trustee from Wellington county has died.

Bruce Schieck of Drayton, who passed away at Hospice Wellington on Sept. 16, served on the Upper Grand District School board for 20 years and its predecessor board for seven more before that.

“Bruce was a champion for public education and for his community,” states a post on the UGDSB website.

In 2018, the year he left the board, Schieck was named the recipient of the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association President’s Award, which celebrates trustees “who have stood by their vision and selflessly given of themselves to the students and parents of Ontario for more than 25 years.”

“Bruce had a true love for his family, farming and the community where he spent all of his 84 years,” his obituary reads, noting there are family members throughout the county and beyond.

In addition to his time on the school board, Schieck was on the original board of directors for Drayton Festival Theatre and he was involved with numerous community and agriculture-related organizations.
