MOUNT FOREST – Last night's torrential downpour broke daily rainfall records set in Mount Forest over a decade ago.

According to the weather section of the Government of Canada website, the total precipitation recorded in Mount Forest on July 23 was 63.1 mm- setting a new daily rainfall record.

The previous rainfall record for July 23 was 55.4 mm in 2010.

A rainfall warning issued in the area until 12:14 a.m. Wednesday morning warned local rainfall amounts were predicted to sit between 50 to 70 mm.

Soon after the weather began, Mount Forest residents like Mickey Pilon began posting to the Facebook group Mount Forest What's Happening to share the flooding in their neighbourhoods.

Joking that "finally Mount Forest has the swimming pool they always wanted," resident Jocelyn Schaefer said the water was "ankle high" in the No Frills parking lot last night in her post.

Another resident Joe Wettlaufer posted that "numerous curbs" were "flooding streets" as road drains tried- and failed- to keep up at around 7:30 p.m.

Local storm chaser Tom Nickerson also recorded a slow rotation headed east of Harriston at 6:15 p.m.

The rain is anticipated to continue today with a 60 per cent chance of showers and a risk of thunderstorms.
