The Ontario Farmland Trust (OFT) is set to host its annual Farmland Forum on March 20, 2025, bringing together experts and advocates to explore the vital connection between watershed protection and the future of Ontario’s farmlands. Taking place in Elora, Ont. at The GrandWay Events Centre, this full-day hybrid event will offer both in-person and online participation.

This year’s theme, Watershed Wisdom: Water Protection’s Role in Farmland Conservation, marks OFT’s 21st anniversary by returning to the collaborative discussions that laid the foundation for the organization’s work. With farmland loss accelerating, climate change intensifying, and unpredictable weather events becoming more frequent, this forum is a timely call to action. The event will bring together farmers, conservationists, planners, and policymakers to tackle the pressing challenge of protecting Ontario’s watersheds, which is a critical step in ensuring agricultural prosperity for generations to come.

“Having a resilient agricultural sector requires reliable access to clean water,” says Martin Straathof, executive director of OFT.

“Farmers have always been stewards of the land, managing ecosystems beyond their fields and working in direct relationship with the natural environment. Their role in Ontario’s food security and watershed management is essential. This forum is about bringing together the voices and expertise needed to shape a future where both farmland and watersheds are protected. Anyone who has an interest in engaging more with these intersecting issues should attend."

The Farmland Forum will feature keynotes and panel discussions led by leaders in agriculture, conservation, and land use planning. A special plenary session will be delivered by Eli Enns, co-founder and CEO of the IISAAK OLAM Foundation, offering insights on Indigenous-led conservation. Attendees, both in-person and virtual, will have opportunities to participate in interactive roundtable discussions and breakout sessions, making this a unique space for collaboration and action.

For over two decades, the Ontario Farmland Trust has been dedicated to protecting farmlands and associated agricultural, natural, and cultural features through land securement, stewardship, policy research, and education. By convening thought leaders and change-makers at the Farmland Forum, OFT continues to advance its mission of securing Ontario’s agricultural future. Register Today!
