FERGUS – A Fergus woman is amazed by the outpouring of support following the death of her husband in a Highway 6 collision last week.

A GoFundMe to support Sabrina Genereaux is fast approaching its goal of $20,000, raising almost $18,000 in just a few days.

Sabrina is the wife of the late David Genereaux, who died in a Highway 6 collision on Friday Dec. 29.

Emergency services received a report of a two-vehicle crash that Friday morning between Fergus and Guelph on Highway 6 near Eighth Line.

A pickup truck and SUV had collided around 10:30 a.m. and the driver of the SUV, 40-year-old David, died at the scene. The driver of the pickup truck was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Sabrina remembered him as a lighthearted man who was fun, nerdy, loved dad jokes and paintball.

“He wore his heart on his sleeve and he cared about everybody and would go out of his way to make sure that the person next to him was cared for,” Sabrina said in a phone interview. “He’s just a fun loving and caring guy. He just wanted everyone around him to be happy.”

The two met online nearly 10 years ago and met up for ice cream and had good vibes between them right away.

“We ended up going for a walk and just basically spent the whole day together,” she said. “We did about four dates in one date.”

One year later they would be engaged and then two years after that they were married. Just two months ago in October the couple welcomed a child together named Jason.

“He was so excited and nervous because before our son he’d never held a baby or done anything with a baby,” Sabrina said. “As soon as Jason was born, that was the light of his life. That was his pride and joy.”

Sabrina was with Jason in bed when David said he was going out to run some errands on Dec. 29. She knew something was wrong hours later when she had not heard from him before police showed up at her door and “dropped the biggest bomb” of her life.

“A lot of confusion and not knowing what to say and crying, a whole roller coaster of emotions,” she said of her reaction upon hearing David had died.

Through this ordeal, the local community has rallied around Sabrina in ways that can’t be tallied by a GoFundMe page.

“The outreach is just crazy, people contacting me and offering groceries or meals or offering to babysit for me, it’s just been amazing,” Sabrina said. “It just kind of leaves me speechless.”

The loss of David, who Sabrina described as an all around amazing guy who would do anything for his family, will be felt by her and those who knew him.

“He’s going to really be missed,” she said.
