WELLINGTON-HALTON HILLS – A Centre Wellington councillor has been named as an Ontario Green Party candidate.
Bronwynne Wilton, Ward 5 councillor for the township, was announced by the party as its candidate for Wellington-Halton Hills.
Wilton was first elected to Centre Wellington council in the 2022 election which saw township council have a complete change over of elected members from the previous term.
In a press release from the Ontario Green Party, Wilton said there's a need to focus on the possibilities of rural communities.
“Wellington–Halton Hills is undergoing a period of rapid growth and we need a government that understands and prioritizes the needs of rural and small urban communities, not just large urban centres," she said in the release.
”The Ontario Greens understand the need for a provincial government that understands the many contributions rural communities like ours make to the province."
She is also the owner and lead consultant of Wilton Consulting Group which is focused on the agriculture and agri-food sector and has worked with a number of clients including all levels of government to help them adopt more sustainable practices, the release said.
Wilton has lived in Centre Wellington for over 50 years.
“Rural communities like Wellington–Halton Hills feel left behind by Doug Ford’s government,” said Ontario Greens’ leader Mike Schreiner, in the release. “Bronwynne is a local champion whose collaborative nature makes her unafraid of proposing new innovative solutions to your priorities.”
A provincial election has not been called but there has been speculation of an early election being called by Premier Doug Ford.
Progressive-Conservative Ted Arnott has been the long time MPP for the riding but announced last year he would not be seeking re-election.
No other parties have announced candidates for the riding.
