Body found at scene of morning U-Haul fire in Elora

Police say this is an isolated incident and there's no threat to public safety

ELORA – Emergency responders found one person dead in a U-Haul vehicle that was on fire Thursday morning. 

At approximately 9:30 a.m., emergency crews responded to a reported vehicle fire in a driveway at 24 Wilson Cr. 

Neighbours who were outside when EloraFergusToday visited the scene reported hearing multiple explosions, loud bangs and a “loud and intense fire.”

A news release said upon arrival a van was found fully engulfed in flames but fire crews were able to extinguish the vehicle. 

Police located one deceased person in the vehicle and are investigating. 

Matthew Burton, OPP spokesperson, said at the scene it is an isolated incident with no threat to public safety. 

Residents were briefly evacuated but Burton said they were able to go back to their homes. 

The fire marshal's office and coroner’s office have been contacted. 

Police are in the early stages of the investigation and are expected to remain on scene until the evening hours.
