A four-storey, 58-unit apartment building is proposed to be built in Palmerston.

PALMERSTON – The public will get a chance to have its say on the proposal for a mid-rise apartment building in Palmerston but the public school board has a few requests to get its full approval.

The Town of Minto is holding a public meeting on a zoning bylaw amendment that would permit a developer to build a four-storey mixed use apartment building at 475 Main St. E. across from TG Minto in Palmerston.

The building is proposed to have ground floor commercial space and 58 residential units of one, two and three bedroom apartments.

A letter from the Upper Grand District School Board (UGDSB) — school boards regularly comments to council on development proposals — advised its planning department does not object to the application as long as it follows a few conditions.

One of these is that the developer should put up a sign at the development “advising prospective residents that students may be directed to schools outside the neighbourhood.”

The UGDSB is also requesting education development charges be collected prior to issuance of building permits, provide a digital plan of subdivision, agree to a site plan with adequate pathways for children to walk to school or a bus stop, and include a clause in all sales or leases letting residents know buses will not travel on privately owned and maintained roads.

The public meeting will be held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday at Minto’s council chambers at 5491 Highway 89 outside of Harriston.
