WELLINGTON NORTH – A large barn fire on Labour Day in Wellington North killed many pigs.

Callisse Loos, a deputy fire chief with Mapleton, Minto and Wellington North, said in an email 1,599 pigs died in a barn fire on Sideroad 5 East near Derrynane, east of Kenilworth.

She said firefighters responded around 4:37 p.m. and were on the scene for six hours. No injuries were reported to civilians and firefighters.

The building ended up being a total loss with the deputy chief giving a damage estimate of $1.5 million.

The fire is not considered suspicious but a cause was not able to be determined due to the extent of the damage.
