Pedestrian Signal

EloraFergusToday received the following letter to the editor from reader Jacquie Holyoak about a close call with a semi-truck.

Yesterday I decided to walk across the street to FreshCo after being knocked down by a car in February from which I am STILL recouperating and using a walker.

I am still nervous crossing the road at that intersection. It took me 2 months to finally get up the courage to walk across the street after my accident. I am very aware of my surroundings now.

It was exactly the same situation. I was waiting to cross the road. I pushed the cross walk button and waited until it flashed the white walking man to give me the right of way. But as I was just about to walk out, I looked!! There was an 18 wheeler truck turning right. HE DID NOT SEE ME and had no clue I was there.

I had the right of way,... HE was suppose to see me and wait and let me cross before he turned right. Did he? NO,... I had to JUMP back onto the sidewalk. THATS when he finally saw me and we made eye contact. I threw up my arms to ask "WTF?" and he just kept driving.

That driver had no clue he nearly killed me. If I hadn't jumped back and just walked out when I was suppose to ~ I WOULD BE DEAD right now.

The drivers in this town are clueless and so focused on getting where they are going they DON'T LOOK FOR PEDESTRIANS!

Now I won't cross that road at all. I don't drive and have to walk everywhere. But drivers just don't see us!!!!!
