In July, James Scott carried a canoe around Elora to raise money for youth rehab Centre Portage Ontario.
Last year, James raised around $1,400 by walking for a cause. This year, he raised $2,400.
“Next year we are going to do an open invitation for anyone who wants to come portage with us,” James told EloraFergusToday. “We’re thinking of doing teams to switch off.”
This month, James is working on cyclying 500 km as part of the Great Cycle Challenge to fight children’s cancer. He is riding for Addison Hill, who passed away earlier this year after being diagnosed with a rare and aggressive cancer called angiosarcoma in 2021.
So far, James has raised $1,300 for this fundraiser.
Given everything that James does for our community, we at EloraFergusToday thought he would be the perfect recipient for our first-ever Random Act of Kindness.
Our team showed up with some gifts for James to show our appreciation for his kind actions.
When asked why James spends so much time raising funds and awareness for causes locally, he told EloraFergusToday, “Having a platform like a business, I just wanted to set a model for other businesses that we have the ability to make change.”
“Anyone can make change, it doesn’t have to be a huge grand gesture,” James said.
He also wanted to thank the businesses and residents who have helped to recognize his contributions to our community. “Thank you to those who donated gifts and for the words of encouragement,” James said. “I don’t do what I do for recognition but it definitely feels nice.”
Thank you to our generous co-sponsors, Elora Home Hardware, Geddes Street Market and Lost + Found Cafe, for making this Random Act of Kindness possible.
Our nomination form is always open to nominate someone in the community who selflessly gives of themselves despite challenges or hardships, is positive in the face of adversity, or is just plain extraordinary and deserves a special surprise.
