The city has announced it will no longer be using the social media platform X.

Residents looking to stay up-to-date on the City of Cambridge will have to do so on social media channels other than X.

The city announced on Monday that it's no longer going to use the platform.

"This is part of our ongoing efforts to refine our social media practices and find new and meaningful ways to connect with our community." Alana Russell, director of communications, said.

The announcement was followed by a press release on the city's website.

In it, it said a lack of "reliability, accountability and direction" was the reasoning for the decision.

"The city is committed to keeping residents informed through clear, accessible and responsible communication," the release reads.

"This decision follows ongoing concerns about the platform’s viability as a trusted space for public communication as content found and promoted on X includes racism and misinformation. The city feels X no longer aligns with the values of inclusivity, respect, integrity, service and responsible communication."

City Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn accounts will remain active.

Alternative platforms, such as Bluesky, are being considered.

"Additionally, as part of the city’s commitment to maintaining constructive digital engagement, the city will continue to review its approach to social media interactions, including comment sections, to limit the spread of harmful or misleading content," the release said.
