Being a Scot away from home, I love everything Scottish: kilts, cabers, castles and ceilidhs. So imagine my joy when I came across the lovely town of Fergus, Ontario, which boasts its world-class Scottish Festival and Highland Games. For one weekend in August, guests are transported to Scotland without the airfare.
From the opening of the gates to the final skirl of the pipes, I immersed myself in everything Scottish.
Arriving early to make the most of my day, I headed over to the Clan Tents in the Heritage Village. Always good for some craic*, the clan representatives are full of great stories, clan knowledge and Scottish history.
Just past the Clan Tents, I noticed the striking wavy coat and magnificent long horns of the Hielan’ Coo*! What a great Instagram opportunity!
It was now time to make my way to the Highland Dance Competitions. I just love experiencing the colour and energy of Highland dance. The dancers’ skill and endurance never fail to impress me.
Time for some refreshments!
While most people think whisky is the ultimate Scottish drink, I don’t think I know any Scot who doesn’t love a good cuppa! The Tea Tent offered tea and scones, some welcome shade and the captivating tunes of Tommy Leadbeater. If tea is a bit tame for you, there are several excellent whisky tastings scheduled at the Whisky Tent.
Revitalized, I was ready to brush up my Gaelic with Gillebrìde Mac Millan from the Outlander series. ‘S math sin*!
Spoilt for choice, I decided to follow the sound of loud cheering from the Main Field, where I was treated to the excitement and strength of the braw, kilted, heavy-events laddies.
You really don’t want to miss the massed pipes and drums on the Main Field. I cheered my lungs out while wiping a wee tear from my eye. It carried me back to grand days out to Bellahouston Park and Glasgow Green to experience the World Pipe Band Championships.
To round off my day, I headed off to the Highland Pub where I gie’d it laldy* with the top-class bands and musicians.
Whether you are Scottish or not, this is a fantastic destination for a summer day out. I can’t wait to see what is on offer this year and I might just bring the whole clan!
