Erica Voisin hasn’t always been a real estate agent. For years she worked in the social profit sector. It was only after she was ready to return to work following her third maternity leave that she considered making a change.
Like many women, she was looking for a job that had some flexibility and could fit well into her family life. She also happened to have a strong entrepreneurial streak, wanted to be able to work closely with people and develop real relationships, and to build her own successful business.
“I also spent hours and hours searching the MLS, so figured it was something worth pursuing!” laughs Voisin, who came by her love of real estate naturally and was already an aficionado.
In 2017 she got her first start in real estate, joining established agents George Mochrie and Amanda Lirusso.
Mochrie was actually the one who showed her her first house in Centre Wellington. He showed her one of his listings on South River Road. She had called him direct, they met later that day, but by the next day the house had already sold. “We hit it off right away though,” says Voisin.
She wasn’t a licensed REALTOR® at the time and had only just started taking the required courses. Voisin and her husband looked at a number of places with Mochrie throughout Fergus and Belwood; he represented them when the couple finally bought a place in Fergus.
“That search took close to a couple of years and we started working together about six months after I moved to Fergus,” says the agent. “It was a good transition back to work for me and I got to see if real estate was the right fit. The rest, as they say, is history.”
One of the things Voisin finds most rewarding about working as a realtor is being able to genuinely help people with such a huge decision in their life. “If you’re buying or selling a home, it’s a big deal. More often than not, it’s not a simple process either. It can be overwhelming, it can be nothing but business, it can be emotional. It can need to be done next week or it can be someone who is thinking about selling in the next few years,” she says.
For most of us, it is the largest financial investment we’ll ever make in our lives. There is a lot at stake and everyone’s needs are different.
“It is rewarding being able to adapt to the various needs of our clients and guide them through that process,” says the agent.
Voisin has years of experience working in multi-level marketing, program management and process development. She also has great people skills and brings a unique, client-focused perspective to real estate.
She thinks Centre Wellington is a fabulous place to live and looks forward to the area one day having bike lanes, a new school and hopefully some more housing. “It needs to grow to continue to be fabulous, but I sure hope we can keep what makes it so special,” she says.
Anyone who is just starting out in the workforce or who may be considering making a career change later in life should definitely consider real estate, says the agent. “It’s a totally achievable goal and an amazing adventure,” says Voisin, “but it’s not for the faint of heart.”
The REALTOR® specializes in working with first-time buyers, young families who are downsizing and small to mid-size commercial properties.
