Man charged in copper wire thefts that caused $100K in damage

On Aug. 31, 2024, at approximately 3:30 p.m. the Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) began an investigation into the theft of copper wire from hydro lines. The damages and losses were reported at upwards of $100,000. With the help of the West Region Emergency Response Team (ERT) the investigation has led to the arrest of Kevin M. Gibson, of Cambridge, he has been charged with:

  • theft over $5,000 contrary to the Criminal Code
  • mischief - destroys or damages property contrary to the Criminal Code

The accused is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice - Guelph, at a later date.
