December 26th, 1937 - February 5th, 2025
Dad passed peacefully at home, surrounded by family he loved, at age 87. He rejoins Mum, who he missed so much.
Doug grew up in Elora on the family farm, and met Bonnie (Bronwyn) at a dance, marrying his one true love in 1961. He worked for Dixon Lumber in Fergus for well over 40 years. An indispensable part of their operations, they continued calling on him for advice after he retired. Doug and Bonnie owned Hilltop Variety in Elora from 1984 to 2008, making lasting connections with the community.
An avid woodworker, he built furniture, boats, campers and in his “retirement” built and sold Muskoka chairs to happy customers, many of whom became repeat customers. He never built anything halfway and quite a bit of the furniture he built for his family is still in use today.
The best words to describe Doug are kind, gentle and loving. Nothing was more important to him than his family and home and he devoted himself to their every need. We are grateful for his unconditional love, shown every day in many ways.
Doug was predeceased by his beloved Bonnie in 2015, a couple of weeks before their 54th wedding anniversary. He will be overjoyed to be with her again. Also predeceased by his son James (2011), his parents Joseph & Florence, his brothers Harvey (Bernice) & Bob (Betty), and sisters Marie Fitzpatrick (Bob) & Doreen Morden (Earl).
Doug is survived by his daughters, Carolyn and Lori, son-in-law Chris, four grandchildren, Matthew, Kate, Dustin and Ryan, two great-grandchildren James and Lillian (aka Susie), brother Fred (Wendy), as well as many nieces and nephews.
We will be lost without his love and guidance.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Doug may be made to the Centre Wellington Food Bank or to Operation Smile, and are greatly appreciated by his family.
