Wellington Catholic School Board was one of the school boards across North America part of a recent cyber attack
The board uses PowerSchool and the app was targeted in the cyber attack.
An email sent to families said the data breach occurred between Dec. 22 to 28. PowerSchool confirmed with the board the data accessed has been deleted and hasn’t been posted online.
The board initiated its response plan through its cyber incident response team to ensure its critical systems continued to be operational.
It's working with PowerSchool to investigate the attacks and find out the full scope. WCDSB is continuing to check for any specific information that may have been accessed or exported from PowerSchool.
“Out of an abundance of caution, we have notified the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario,” the email stated.
Since it's an ongoing investigation there isn’t more information at this time but staff and the WCDSB community will be updated once information is available.
The Upper Grand District School Board was not impacted by the cyber attack, confirmed Heather Loney, UGDSB spokesperson, via email. It does use a PowerSchool product called School Messenger for bulk emails and phone calls to families but it doesn't use its student information system.
