ERIN – The Town of Erin has picked its consultant for a wide ranging study which will serve as a framework to address its current and future transportation needs.

At a meeting Thursday, Erin council awarded 30 Forensic Engineering Inc. the contract to handle the town’s transportation master plan for $81,648.

A report explained the transportation master plan aims to enhance connectivity and reduce congestion by analyzing existing infrastructure, predicting future demand and incorporating various modes of transportation.

“This transportation master plan is going to address important themes such as community connectivity, active transportation, truck routes, pedestrian safety, long range planning for an efficient road network,” said Brian Kavanagh, director of infrastructure services for Erin.

Kavanagh mentioned he’s been encouraged by the amount of public engagement and interest in the transportation master plan which isn’t normally the case for such initiatives.

“It’s quite clear this is a very important step for our community,” he said.

When asked by Coun. Bridget Ryan if horse travel and large agriculture equipment were being considered, Kavanagh said those were important considerations and he would bring them forward.

Although the consultant was the lowest priced bidder, Coun. John Brennan wanted to make it clear to the public this was not the only reason they were chosen.

“There is a process by which the proposals are graded from a quality and engineering point of view,” Brennan said.

Council unanimously approved awarding the contract.
