CENTRE WELLINGTON – No one was injured at a weekend fire at a local campground but it remains under investigation.

One trailer was destroyed and another was damaged in a fire at Highland Pines campground off Wellington Road 19 near Belwood on Saturday.

Centre Wellington deputy fire chief Jason Benn said Elora and Fergus fire stations were called to a fire at the campground just before 10 p.m. Saturday.

One trailer was on fire which spread to an adjacent one. There were no injuries but one firefighter was taken to the hospital for heat exhaustion as a precautionary measure.

“He is well and recovering,” Benn said. “It was extremely humid and warm and in that particular area there were a lot of tall trees, so the breeze was very minimal.”

The deputy chief said this was a “tough fire” but it was ultimately suppressed fairly quickly and noted park staff were very helpful in directing firefighters to the right location in a timely manner.

The fire remains under investigation with no damage estimate available or a determination if it was suspicious or not.
