Eden Mills Music at the Hall is privileged to welcome The Dave Young Trio as they salute Canada’s Oscar Peterson, pre-eminent jazz pianist and composer. They perform on the Eden Mills Community Hall stage on Friday, Oct. 14 at 8 pm, re-launching performances after a two-year COVID hiatus.

The Dave Young Trio has the history and musical mastery to do Oscar Peterson’s music justice. After all, bassist Dave Young began performing with Oscar in 1972; drummer Terry Clark toured with Oscar in 1982; and pianist John Sherwood has extensive experience playing the Oscar Peterson repertoire.

Bassist and composer Dave Young, is, without a doubt, one of Canada’s most valuable and beloved musical exports in both jazz and classical settings. The list of musicians with whom Dave has shared the stage is a virtual “Who’s Who” of international jazz...including Oscar Peterson (with whom Dave had a thirty-five-year musical relationship), Peter Appleyard, Clark Terry, Harry “Sweets” Edison, Zoot Simms, Joe Williams, Oliver Jones, Ed Bickert, Ranee Lee and many more. One of Dave Young’s most beloved gigs was a five-year stint (1961-66) as a member of iconic jazz guitarist Lenny Breau’s quartet.

John Sherwood is recognized by his audiences and his peers as one of the top jazz pianists in Canada today. He has performed, toured, and/or recorded with a lengthy list of jazz greats including Moe Koffman, Peter Appleyard, Guido Basso, Kenny Wheeler, Rob McConnell, Ed Bickert, Jake Hanna, and Butch Miles.

Percussionist Terry Clarke has recorded well over 300 albums with various jazz artists including Jim Hall, Oscar Peterson, Peter Appleyard, Rob McConnell, The Singers Unlimited, Frank Rossolino, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Lew Tabackin, Freddie Hubbard, Jay McShann, Buddy Tate, Emily Remler, John Handy III, Ed Bickert, Helen Merrill and Roger Kellaway. Terry is a familiar face at jazz festivals in Europe, Canada, Japan and the U.S.

Oscar Peterson (1925-2007) was described, upon his induction to the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, as “An eminent jazz pianist with technical mastery and limitless creativity, Oscar Peterson was a performer who could instantly inspire awe. He earned the nickname “Maharaja of the Keyboard” from none other than Duke Ellington and can count many of the greatest names in jazz among his devoted legion of fans.”

In November 2021 Mack Avenue Records released A Time for Love: The Oscar Peterson Quartet Live in Helsinki (1987) with Dave Young on bass, Joe Pass on guitar and Martin Drew on drums. “This is a fizzingly good live album from one of the piano greats near the height of his powers.” (Mark McKergow, London Jazz News.)

“Music at the Hall” programs concerts and events to keep the village hopping, and to raise funds for the Community Hall operations. The heritage Hall is proud to be carbon neutral!
