Public meeting to be held on proposed Catholic high school in Fergus

The WCDSB has applied to the ministry to add a secondary school holding nearly 500 students to an existing elementary school

FERGUS – The public will get a chance to learn a little more about a proposal to add another high school in Fergus.

GSP Group is hosting an open house about the "development vision" for a secondary school that would be at the current Strathallan Park and next to the existing St. Joseph Catholic Elementary School in north Fergus on the evening of May 28 at the Wellington County Museum and Archives' Aboyne Hall.

The concept plan, a notice said, is for a two-storey school for the Wellington Catholic District School Board (WCDSB) connected to the elementary school with 105 parking spaces and a soccer/football field.

There will be a presentation with an opportunity for the public to review posters, provide feedback or ask questions of the project team.

Earlier this year, Centre Wellington council approved declaring Strathallan Park as surplus which would allow it to be sold to the WCDSB and therefore strengthen its application for funding to the Ministry of Education.

report said the secondary school would be able to accommodate 492 Grade 9 to Grade 12 students with 11 classrooms, four technical/vocational rooms, three science labs, two music and art rooms and oe special education resource room.

This would be the first WCDSB high school in Wellington County. Students right now have to go to Guelph to attend Catholic high school.
