On June 13, The Town of Erin welcomed a new Freightliner tanker firetruck to the Emergency Services fleet, replacing Tanker 58.

“I’m excited,” said Erin Fire Chief Jim Sawkins, explaining that with a fully updated fleet, Erin Fire and Emergency Services can now obtain a Superior Tanker Shuttle Certification.

This certification, provided by the Fire Underwriter’s Survey, sets standards on the level of water coverage needed to fight fires on rural properties where there may be no hydrants, compared to city and town buildings.

The new truck can carry 3,000 gallons of water, as opposed to the 1,500-gallon capacity of the previous unit.

Tanker 58 and Tanker 57, (which was replaced in 2021) can carry a combined 6,000 gallons of water.

“It allows people in rural Erin to experience similar insurance rates as those that live in hydrant-protected areas,” Sawkins said. “We’re able to double our water delivery capacity.”

The truck was purchased from Dependable Emergency Vehicles for $582,000, funded through the Development Charges Reserve, The Fire Apparatus Reserve and through taxes.
