The Markham Waterloo Mennonite Conference has proposed to build a new school, church and cemetery at this property in Damascus.

WELLINGTON NORTH – Wellington North council will consider approving a zoning application that would permit a new church, school and cemetery at a single property in a rural area of the township.

The rezoning application is for six acres of land on Line 6 near the Wellington Road 16 intersection in the hamlet of Damascus northeast of Arthur.

According to a planning report, it would permit the construction of a church, cemetery and parochial school by the Markham Waterloo Mennonite Conference.

The property received severance and easement approval to create separate lots needed for the proposed use from the County of Wellington in December.

The report said no objections have been received from commenting agencies and planning staff is of the opinion the proposal represents appropriate use of the land and is consistent with relevant planning policies.

“The introduction of a church, cemetery and parochial school conforms to the policies of the County Official Plan which supports relatively small-scale and compatible development in the rural context of hamlets,” the report said.

Wellington North council will consider this application at its meeting on Monday afternoon.
