Guelph Lake Trail signs vandalized with threatening language

Angry messages spray painted over trail signs are directed at the Guelph Off-Road Bicycling Association (GORBA)

Concern is being expressed after signs around the Guelph Lake Trail were defaced with hateful, sometimes threatening, messages.

Much of the language claims the Guelph Off-Road Bicycling Association (GORBA) is hurting trees by attaching signs to them, but go further by using profanity and threatening bodily harm.

"In the winter time, it was really odd. That's when we first noticed this kind of stuff," said Andy Hagen, GORBA member and trail crew volunteer, noting they would sometimes just see things put in the way on trails.

"It's been a little bit on-again, off-again. But it turned on real fast just now."

The vandalism was noticed for the first time Wednesday.

"There are some people on our crew that have young kids, and they're feeling really nervous about taking their children on the trail," Hagen said.

"We don't want somebody stringing up some sort of booby trap, and some kid gets hurt when all they're doing is learning to love nature in a different way."

If you see anything suspicious on the trail, you're asked to report it to the police. You're also asked to notify GORBA, so they can fix the issue.

A request for comment form Wellington County OPP was not immediately returned.
