Downtown Elora bakery's reopening after fire remains to be determined

Elora Bread Trading Co. is still closed while the cause of a fire in their oven is being investigated

ELORA – It remains uncertain when a Downtown Elora bakery will be reopening after a small fire ruined an oven.

On Oct. 6 in the afternoon, CW Fire Department responded to reports of smoke at the Elora Bread Trading Co. on Metcalfe Street.

Multiple fire trucks attended to the scene of what turned out to be a small fire that was quickly contained.

Owner Greg Dove said in an interview at the bakery nobody was there at the time of the fire which meant there were no injuries.

He said the exact cause of the fire is still being determined.

“It was all contained within the oven, there was no structural damage, no one was in there at the time all the staff had gone home for the day,” Dove said. “It was some freak sort of combustion.”

The bakery has been closed since the fire because the oven is in a state of disrepair.

“It’s really the only piece of cooking equipment we have in there and it’s done,” Dove said.

Dove said they’re working with insurance and the oven manufacturer to figure out a repair or replacement timeline which is still to be determined.

Once the root cause of the fire is figured out that’s when it’ll become more clear when it can open again.

Dove said the fire department’s response was great and he’s grateful for the support from the community during this difficult time.

“Everyone’s sending their well wishes you know it’s sort of like ‘oh no, where am I going to get my bread?’ but also ‘I hope you guys get back up and running soon’ and that feels really nice,” Dove said.

For now, he said the bakery is undergoing cleaning to make sure all the smoke is out of their equipment.

He thanked the community for their patience while they sort out when they can reopen.
