Hear ye knitters, your skills are needed to help keep some community members warm.

After receiving nearly 200 skeins of yarn by Ryan Newall of Spinrite LP in Listowel, Guelph-based manufacturer Danby Appliances is turning to the community to turn that donated yarn into warm mitts and gloves which will later be donated to The Clothing Closet at the New Life Christian Reformed Church Of Guelph.

“We're looking for functional mittens to keep people warm. Put your inspirations into it, make it beautiful and keep it simple whatever. It’s your level of knitting, go for it,” said Cherie Bauman, executive assistant at Danby.

The skeins are available in various colours. Knitters can pick up yarn at the reception desk in Danby on Whitelaw Road during business hours. They’re expected to return their creations back to Danby by the end of November.

The activity was initiated by Jim Estill, CEO of Danby.

“Winter is coming and people in need will need warm mittens. Sharing this with knitters is the way to get this need served,” said Estill.

Bauman said Danby currently has 175 skeins of wool left.

“We work closely with a lot of the different community organizations here in Guelph so it’s part of giving back to our community on a regular basis,” said Bauman.

“Winter is coming and things are tough after the pandemic a lot of our services are being used on a more regular basis. We thought it would be a nice gesture to get the community knitting and help some of the folks at the community closet.”
