WELLINGTON COUNTY – The County of Wellington is looking to appoint a former mayor as a citizen representative on the health board.

County council will hold a special meeting Tuesday to appoint George Bridge as a citizen member of the WDG Public Health Board of Directors for a two-year term, replacing warden Andy Lennox.

Bridge was the Minto mayor for three terms, first elected in 2010. He did not seek re-election in the recent municipal election.

The board of health typically has eight municipal members: three from Guelph, three from Wellington County and two from Dufferin County.

While these folks are often municipal councillors, a letter from Medical Officer of Health Dr. Nicola Mercer to county council indicates the member councils can appoint a citizen as a member in place of a municipal councillor.

“Mr. Bridge has an extensive knowledge of public health as well as the issues that the board may be facing in the near future with the ‘modernization’ of public health,” Mercer wrote. “Mr. Bridge would be an excellent choice as a citizen appointee.”

Bridge would join Guelph/Eramosa mayor Chris White and Minto county councillor David Anderson as Wellington County’s representatives on the board.
