About Big Brothers Big Sisters Of Centre Wellington

WE ARE THE LEADING VOICE OF MENTORSHIP

Our mission at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Centre Wellington is to enable life-changing mentoring relationships to ignite the power and potential of young people. We serve young people who face adversity and are in need of an additional consistent and supportive Developmental Relationship.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Centre Wellington offers mentoring programs are grounded in intentional, purposeful, relationship building with youth. Search Institute® has a 50-year legacy of linking research and practice to address critical issues in education and youth development. Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) has adopted an evidence-based relationship building framework called the Developmental Relationships Framework. Developmental relationships are close connections through which young people discover who they are, cultivate abilities to shape their own lives, and learn how to engage with and contribute to the world around them.

Mentoring programs are delivered by professionally trained volunteer mentors to build impactful, conscious developmental relationships with their mentees. After training and supporting mentors to achieve developmental relationships, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Centre Wellington uses the developmental framework to evaluate the success and impact of each mentoring relationship.

Research tells us that each element of a developmental relationship (Expressing Care, Challenging Growth, Providing Support, Sharing Power and Expanding Possibilities) matters in young people’s development. To this end, strategically and systematically investing in building developmental relationships can be the catalytic for effective education, social-emotional growth and resiliency that carries all children into a positive and successful adulthood.

OUR PROGRAMS

One-to-One Community-Based mentoring - Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring program provides young people aged 6 - 18 with a role model to talk to and share the experiences of growing up with. Through regular outings, a relationship is developed between the mentor and the mentee, which is built on trust and common interests, and is supported by our experienced case-workers. The result is a life-changing experience for both the mentor and the mentee.

The community-based mentoring program usually requires two regularly scheduled outings a month of a few hours each and a minimum of a one-year commitment. Enroll a Young Person or Volunteer

Site-Based mentoring - Site-Based mentoring program provides youth with a role model and a friend to talk to and share the experiences of growing up. Meetings take place within The B-Hive. For one hour a week, mentors meet with their mentee and engage in activities such as board games, crafts or just hang out on here on site.

Site-Based Mentoring programs requires a weekly visit of one hour for the duration of the school year. Matches do not meet over the summer break or during other school holidays. Enroll a Young Person or Volunteer
